SIMCom Smart Module Series Overview
SIMCom's Smart Module portfolio provides comprehensive solutions ranging from high-computing demands to essential connectivity. The products are categorized into three tiers based on processor performance, display capabilities, and connectivity type to meet diverse embedded application needs.
 1. High-End Tier
The High-End modules are engineered for applications requiring powerful computing capabilities and high-resolution multimedia features.
Shared Features: Core uses QCM6125 Octa-Core CPU (or the more advanced QCS6490 chip in SIM9650L), with a main frequency up to 2.0GHz, supporting 2520*1080 dual display and up to 25MP camera.
Connectivity Differentiation:
SIM8970X (With Cellular): Integrates LTE Cat.6 cellular connectivity and supports GNSS positioning, offering a comprehensive communication and positioning solution.
SIM8070 (Without Cellular): Focuses on pure computing power, providing the same CPU and multimedia performance, but does not include cellular network connectivity and GNSS positioning.
Conclusion: In terms of core processor and display specifications, modules with/without cellular connectivity are nearly identical. The main differences, besides Cellular (LTE), also include GNSS positioning.
2. Medium Tier
The Medium-Tier modules strike an optimal balance between performance and cost, suitable for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications.
Shared Features: Uses Octa-Core SDM450 or Quad-Core QCM2290 CPU, featuring multi-camera and single/dual display support. Dimensions are mostly 40.5x40.5mm or 44.1x45.8mm.
Connectivity Differentiation:
With Cellular (SIM8950X/SIM8918X): Built-in LTE Cat.4 connectivity and GNSS positioning, offering stable mobile broadband services.
Without Cellular (SIM8050LH/SIM8918W): Provides only Wi-Fi/BT local connectivity, excluding cellular network and GNSS positioning, suitable for local networks or Wi-Fi coverage environments.
Conclusion: In terms of processor model and size, modules within the same tier maintain consistency. The main differences, besides Cellular (LTE), also include GNSS positioning.
3.Entry Tier
The Entry-Tier modules focus on cost-effectiveness, providing essential computing and connectivity capabilities.
Shared Features: Uses Quad-Core CPU, compact size (approx. 40.5x40.5mm), supporting basic single display and camera functions.
Connectivity Differentiation):
With Cellular (SIM8500X/SIM8905X): Features newer chip specifications (e.g., SL8541) or higher main frequency (e.g., 1.4GHz), and possesses LTE Cat.4 and GNSS capabilities, also supporting Linux or newer Android 10 systems.
Without Cellular (SIM8905E-W): Uses the 1.1GHz MSM8909 chip, with relatively lower performance and clock speed, and does not include cellular network and GNSS.
Conclusion: In the Entry-Tier, Cellular is not the only point of difference. Modules with cellular connectivity typically feature higher clock speed CPUs, support GNSS, and offer better display resolution or operating system options.
